WireGuard or OpenVPN: which to choose

Both protocols are secure. The difference is speed and the networks they work on.

Most VPN services offer two protocols. Both encrypt your traffic, so the choice depends on your device and on the network you are in.

WireGuard: faster and lighter

WireGuard is newer and has far less code, so it connects almost instantly and uses less processor time. On a phone that often means less battery use and a quicker switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. It is the good default for Android, iPhone, Windows, macOS and Linux.

OpenVPN: more compatible

OpenVPN has been around for many years and runs on almost everything, including older devices and routers. It can also run on a port that is rarely blocked, so it sometimes works on networks where WireGuard is stopped, such as some company and hotel networks.

What to do in practice

Start with WireGuard. If the connection does not come up, the network blocks it or your device does not support it, switch to OpenVPN. In your account you can add one device for each protocol and use whichever works at the moment.
