Kill switch: protection when the VPN drops

How to stop traffic leaking outside the VPN when the connection drops.

A kill switch stops traffic from leaving outside the VPN tunnel when the connection drops. That way your address and requests are not briefly visible to the local network, for example on weak Wi-Fi or when the network changes.

What is already done

The WireGuard configurations from our site send all traffic through the tunnel (IPv4 and IPv6). That is the condition under which apps can block connections outside it. The blocking itself is done by the app on your device, so it depends on its settings.

How to switch it on

Windows (WireGuard): the app blocks traffic outside the tunnel automatically when the tunnel carries all traffic. Nothing more is needed.

Android (WireGuard): open the phone settings, go to the VPN section, tap the settings icon next to WireGuard and switch on “Always-on VPN” and “Block connections without VPN”. Names may differ between Android versions.

iPhone and iPad: iOS has no full kill switch for ordinary apps. In the WireGuard app switch on “On-Demand”, so that the tunnel connects automatically when needed.

OpenVPN Connect: in the settings switch on “Seamless Tunnel” if the app offers it. It protects traffic from leaking during a short interruption.

How to check

Connect and open the IP address check. Then cut the internet for a moment and switch it back on. While the tunnel recovers, pages should not load through your local network.
